How to verify if an email from Apple is truly what it says it is. Verify account or else account gets locked.

I received an email from Apple saying I need to verify my account because someone tried accessing it outside of the state I live in. If I don't do this in 24 hours then it will lock. While the site looks the same, a red flag goes up in my head because it is asking me for my social security number. Is this a common thing Apple asks for? I am cautious because I don't want to fall into a trap or scam. Any help would be great. Thank you!

Apple will always address you by your name or the name they have on file for you, not Dear Customer, Dear Client or by using your e-mail address. The e-mail will be from @apple.com or @iTunes.com. E-mail addresses can be spoofed. You can go to Mail/View/Message/Show all Headers to see more. Apple e-mails will never contain an attachment. Apple will never request personal information such as Social Security numbers.
