I have a macbook pro with OSX 10.8.5, a 2.26 intel duo processor, 8GB ram. I am unable to update to newer OS configuration. Any ideas why I am unable to upgrade?

If its an Intel Duo you its too old to support the newest macOs version High Sierra.

You will be limited to only El Capitan.

See here for how to upgrade to el Capitan

Looking it up you have a 13" Core 2 Duo model. That's the only possibility for a 2.26. You should be able to update up to 10.11 (El Capitan).

There's a direct link to iTunes that should bring it up in the Mac App Store:

Get OS X El Capitan
