is the Pro keyboard as unreliable as the media says?

I want to buy a new MacBook Pro in the next few months but am concerned about all the media hype about the butterfly switches in the keyboard and dust. is this as big an issue as they are saying, or just a few isolated instances blown out of proportion?

iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2015), macOS Sierra (10.12.1)

I've had no issues with mine (purchased November 2016) but I'm not sure how widespread the issue is.
