Why does my group text messages keep creating a separate thread or splitting?

I’m currently using the latest iOS software on my iPhone X. When I receive a multi person group text from either a 14, 17, or 20 person group text I keep receiving new threads from each person in the group replying to the group text. It also separates the original group text recipients into groups of 10. (note Android & iOS users are in the group)
