Why does newly installed Time Machine show .3 TBytes while I have 1 TByte on my hard drive?

I installed a new iMac and transferred 1 TByte of info from my old machine to the new one. Then I installed a new hard drive to be used as a Time Machine disk. After installation, Time Machine disk read .3 TBytes. (I have no large video files - mostly pics and Photoshop products.) Why the difference? How do I get a full backup of my hard disk onto Time Machine?

MacBook Pro (13-inch Mid 2010), OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2)
