Question: iPhone sync issue

Just yesterday for the first time both my iPhone 8 and iPod Classic cannot sync to obtain newly purchased music in a playlist. Upon connecting with a good cord the device is automatically recognized in iTunes. Syncing automatically is enabled, but nothing happens. If I click sync, the process starts and moves thru to "preparing to copy items". That prompt appears for a split second and then the process ends. Checking devices I see no new playlist. If I go to General>iTunes Wi-Fi sync on the iPhone, it states "sync will resume when MacBook Pro is available", and "sync now" is greyed out. In iTunes both "Automatically sync when this iPhone is connected" and "Sync this iPhone over wifi" are checked on. This is with MacBook Pro 2017, latest iTunes version, High Sierra 10.13.4. Please help!
