Removing file from MBP iCloud folder without deleting from iCloud

I downloaded a file from my iCloud to my Macbook Pro's iCloud folder.

I want to keep the file in iCloud but remove it from my computer's hard drive.

How do I do this?

MacBook Pro with Retina display, macOS High Sierra (10.13.4)

iCloud is a syncing system, not an external storage system. If you delete them from the device/computer they will be deleted from iCloud. If you are running High Sierra as your profile shows, you can go to System Preferences/iCloud/iCloud Drive/Options and turn Optimization on. As your hard drive gets full, documents will be removed from the computer and stored only in iCloud.
