If I drag and drop images into my presentation.. do I still have to keep them in a designated folder? or do they get implemented automatically. I am seeing tonnes of question marks in an older presentation where I have moved the incl. images into various folders..

Still image files such as jpegs and PNG files, are copied into the Keynote project file.
There is no link created between the original image files and Keynote. Its best practice to have a backup of all your work files, for Keynote this would include the Keynote file and the original image files.
It is best to leave the images in the same place you got them from or the computer may not know where to find them as it will be looking for them in the previous place.
Thanks - I did not realize that Keynote has a different behavior than some other apps which will balk if it cannot find the original images (and just creates aliases in its own database).
where are my images?
