Flashing Yellow #%@*

Just came home with a new AirPort Extreme n-version. Disconnected my former AirPort Extreme (white flying saucer), cabled it up, pluged it in, and installed the software from the included CD onto my MacBook Pro 17 Core2Duo running 10.4.8. The yellow light keeps flashing on the new AirPort. Read the book. It says to check the ethernet cable from the cable modem to the AirPort. Did that. Unplugged the cable modem, let it reset, the plugged it back in. Still get only flashing yellow light. The AirPort IS working on my wireless/wired LAN. I can connect to my server over the AirPort, but cannot connect to the Internet and the light never goes green as it should. Anybody have any ideas? Thanks!

Cable modems usually need to be "blanked" before you can connect a new router or computer to it.

Power down the cable modem.

Wait 30 minutes (go and have a cup of tea or something).

Connect the cable modem to the WAN port of the 802.11n Airport Extreme Base Station (nAEBS).

Switch on the cable modem.

Switch on the nAEBS.

Wait five minutes.

Switch on the Mac.

Use the Airport Utility to configure the AEBS.

I the same issue in the same hardware I tried diconnecting the modenm but only for 1 minute I will try a full power down for 30 min. and report back tomorrow on my findings.

Run AirPort Utility to see what the flashing amber means.

FYI... I had the same issue. Do not be concerned if you have a flashing amber light BUT are able to connect to the internet/network.

I spoke to an Apple engineer about the problem and they said it's a software glitch that will be fixed in the next firmware update.

Ummm, What Royal said...

Flashing yellow means that there is something you SHOULD fix. It could be a wireless network with no security, it could be a base station with a "public" password, it could be a disk that has problems, it could be a few other things. If you open AirPort Utility and open the base station configuration via Manual Setup, you can find out what's wrong and either fix it or tell the base station to ignore it. That AppleCare rep is likely mistaken. (They are just human)

The Apple engineer is correct. Yes, the blinking amber light is an indication of something being wrong but with the NEW Airpot Extreme there is a software glitch where it's not being turned off properly during certain config scenarios.

The NEW Airport Extreme need ALOT OF WORK. Apple shouldn't have released this piece just yet.
