How do I get the voicemail icon on my main screen on my Apple 8

That's correct and how it has always been. As I said in my reply, there is NO app icon for voicemail alone. There is the Phone App icon and you can certainly put that on your home screen.

Want to make a phone call: Tap the Phone App

Want to check voicemial: Tap the Phone App

Want to check recents: Tap the Phone App

It's all contained in the Phone App

That is correct. There is not now, nor has there been in the past an icon just for voicemail.

Yes, that's the way it works.

To access VoiceMail you need to do so through the phone icon.

There is no separate icon for voicemail outside of the phone icon.

There is no separate voicemail icon. You have the Phone App and if you have a message waiting a number like 1 for one message (or missed call) or two for two voicemail messages will appear on the top right hand corner of the Phone App icon. I keep my Phone App icon on the bottom badge row on my iPhone for quick retrieval.

Perhaps you had a dedicated app provided by your carrier. Apple has never provided such an option.
