Final Cut Pro X Mini-DV Capture

I am attempting to convert old vhs tapes.

Here is my setup:

Panasonic VCR

Sony PD-170 with Passthrough cababilities

Macbook Pro

I am capturing vhs to mini-dv and then capturing from the tape to FCP.

Created a new project.

Added an event.

Captured two tapes. *(Somehow it captured a 15 minute portion that I had on a second mini-dv tape. But the 1st tape with majority of the footage captured only 4 minutes and multiple blue screens with no info.

However, when I attempt to archive the entire tape or even capture in 15 minute segments, the captured video is only 1-4 mintues.

I've tried passthrough with the PD-170 but the audio will lose sync after 5 minutes.

I'd like to know if anyone else has had that issue

MacBook Pro (13-inch Mid 2012), macOS High Sierra (10.13.4)

Thank you Tom, I appreciate it. After striping the tape, I captured from the VCR to the miniDV tape. From there, i broke it into segments. Every 20 minutes I would stop the capture and then restart the capture. I now have a full project and am rendering as we speak. I appreciate the advice, I really do. I simply feel that if paying for software it should be more versatile in ability to capture. I simply need to play around with it more. At this point now, everything is working great. Exporting is super cool and workflow took me a little bit to get used to. But, it's all good.

Not sure why I would want to do that. I just paid $300 for this software. There is a hiccup with the pre-roll. If I capture just as the video starts, it will capture the whole tape. However, the sync will be off within fifteen minutes. I may just have to capture every fifteen and then start a new segment. I'm also thinking there is an issue because there is no timecode from actual recording since it's coming from a vcr. But even then, the vcr should give its own timecone. I'm slightly perturbed as I am going on this issue for a week now and still haven't figured out the issue. Does Analyzing and Fixing throw off sync?

The software does not support pass through from devices that don’t generate timecode. The camera doesn’t generate timecode unless it’s actually recording. If you’re capturing from tape your experience seems to indicate that there’s a problem with the sample rate setup in the camera and or with the actual recording which may be caused by breaks in the VHS playback. When FCP captures DV is wants to rewrap to QuickTime. Greatly the software is struggling with your media. The QuickTime player is much more forgiving. It ignores timecode for instance. It’s an option to digitize your media and get it into your system. It’s another tool you can use. But whatever.
