Olympus Photoshop Plugin w/Mac OS 9.2

Hi, I recently picked up an old Mac from a friend with OS 9.2 and Adobe Photshop 6. I have an Olympus E-500 camera, and need to install the plugin so that photoshop can read the .ORF file from the camera (it's RAW format). I can't get the mac to an internet connection, but I do have a thumb drive to transfer data. Can anyone walk me through the process of installing this plugin? BTW, this is my first Mac, so I'm new to the navigation.

unknown, Mac OS 9.2.x

Shadowjak, welcome to Apple Discussions & the Mac Community.

Locate the Adobe Photoshop folder. In this folder should be a folder titled Plug-ins. Put the plug-in in this folder. If it doesn't work when placed in this folder, put it in the Import/Export folder within the Plug-ins folder. In the Finder, the plug-in should have an E-like icon.

I'm guessing you have a G3 or G4 Mac. If you select the Apple System Profiler under the Apple (left side) in the Menu, it will tell you what Mac you have.

Hello Shadowjak,
I hope you followed the great advicce from Texas MacMac.. I would offer another differnet work around.. That is to get a card reader. They are inexpensive, and I believe you use SD cards which will work. Then you drop the card into the reader and it shows up on the desktop and Photshop will open from there. This is an easy fix and helps save the batteries from your camers. I yse this methid with my Olympus. I know that it is nice to be able to use the camera ** I have found that using the reader extends my battery life.

Just a thought.....mGb,.........Jim

Hi, Shadowjack -

Another path, which will work at least until you can find the correct plugin, is to get GraphicConverter. GC can convert most any graphic file format from/to most any other, any platform, including RAW.

GC has lots of nice features - cataloging, slideshow, batch conversion and renaming, and more. The batch conversion allows converting a folder full of files and folders, many thousands of files at a time, in one operation. This can be handy for those times when a whole bunch of files need to be converted from one format to another.

HI, shadowjak. The plug-in you need is here. (Note: this link is a direct download — the file will be downloaded as soon as you click on it in this message.) Put it in the Import/Export folder inside Photoshop's main Plug-ins folder. You will then use the Import command in Photoshop's File menu to import and open your .orf files, the same as if you were scanning an image into Photoshop. I don't know whether or not you'll be able to open your .orf files in Photoshop by double-clicking them, but I'd be surprised.

I've tested to see whether the plug-in enables the .orf Import command in Photoshop 5.0.2, and it does; removing the plug-in makes that command disappear. I don't have an .orf file to test with, but if this all works in PS 5.0.2, I'd expect it to work in PS 6. Here are Olympus's installation instructions:
