iphone disabled/top button does not work

My son has my husbands old iphone5, which has the common message "iPhone disabled, connect to iTunes". It is not however recognized by iTunes. In my search to restore, the information said to hold the top button and home at the same time. The top button on this phone has not worked for some time. My husband loaded a digital button on the screen but that does not seem to work in this case. Any insight is appreciated. (very worrisome 9 yr old waiting)

Good morning Lilo70,

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!

I understand you are trying to work with an iPhone that is disabled with a button that is not working.

If you forgot the passcode for your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, or your device is disabled
You may need to have an Apple Genius or an Apple Authorized Service Provider take a look at your iPhone to see if they can resolve this issue for you. Click on the "Service and Support" section of the resource below to find one near you.
