Other options instead of PDF forms...

I use Acrobat Pro to generate pdf forms that are sent out to our field techs who in turn fill them in on various jobs and email them back to the managers here.

No matter what we try to do, someone invariably runs one of those forms through Preview. Then they usually lie about it. After that, chaos reigns.

I am just looking for options. It I knew that our techs would have net access (we are in the oil fields of far West Texas), then setting up a php/python/html5 system that populates a mySQL (or whatever) db would be awesome, but I just can't rely on the connection being there and then I would have to rely on our techs figuring out how to send the data later (which they will forget to do).

I know this may be off topic, but I have been getting so frustrated with this issue lately. If Apple isn't willing to properly support pdfs, then remove the ability of Preview to open them. At least then it would force people to use Reader.

If nothing else, can someone here please suggest a solid alternative?

Yes and no.

One of the more prevalent issues that I have come across is if a form has a large text box (just simple text) that a tech has to fill in, which they do fill in and save then email back, it will show up as a blank field upon opening at this end. Then, if you click on the "empty" field, the text appears. But as soon as you move to a different area, the text disappears again making it impossible to print. That particular problem seems to only afflict the multi-line text box, not the single line.

Now, as far as the single line text boxes, there have been all sorts of strange issues. Some of which you can't even see until you print the document and then have what looks like double exposed areas of text.

I have an example of what that tends to look like. The crazy thing, you will have no idea there is anything out of whack until you hit print (to printer or pdf).

I've never seen that, and I've been working with an Adobe workflow on Macs and PC's for a really long time; and we use a Acrobat to Preview back to Acrobat workflow on occasion.

but from a troubleshooting standpoint:

• try another printer, if you don't have one there ask someone else to try and print. Make sure the printer drivers are compatible with your OS and up-to-date. Make sure Preview and Acrobat are up-to-date as well.

• export the acrobat file from another PDF exporter

• if this is a template you may need to re-build it from the ground up.

I've never used any of these but you can give them a try.
