Sierra update 10.13.5 (17F77)

Well, this newest update has totally slowed down the MacBook Pro! Has anyone else been having speed and beach ball problems with it? Everything was working fine before!

macOS High Sierra (10.13.3), 10.3.5

Obviously, if your 2016 MacBook Pro is running slow after this High Sierra update, something is seriously WRONG with the update! I've had same issues with Finder and Safari ever since 10.13.4 and security update 2018-001. They are not hardware specific, because now I've rolled back to Sierra (10.12.6) and everything works just fine. In addition, I've tried a clean reinstall of High Sierra, with no 3rd-party software at all, no plugins and no extensions in Safari. And macOS was still acting out after applying the updates. This is not normal and it is an issue on Apple's end, which must be resolved. It also could be a more sinister issue, like macOS being deliberately used to slow down older Macs in the same way iOS has been known to slow down older iPhones. In any case, it is totally unacceptable!

Boot into Recovery Mode and run Disk Utility > First Aid. If it reports OK then try running the 10.13.5 Combo Update:

Download macOS High Sierra 10.13.5 Combo Update

The Combo Update is a fuller install, as opposed to an incremental "delta" update, so it should overwrite any files that are damaged or missing. It does not matter if you have applied it before. It should preserve all your data and settings but that said you should always have a backup.

Possibly, they are fickle.

If you're getting the same cannot unmount message on 2 different Macs it is odd.

First have you tried anSMC reset?

How to reset the System Management Controller (SMC) on your Mac - Apple Support

If that doesn't work you might try the unmount or force unmount command in Terminal:

Launch/Utilities/Terminal and copy & paste this command at the prompt:

diskutil list

Press return.

If it sees the disk, note the number of the disk (far left column) you want to unmount.

Then, copy & paste this command:

unmount force /dev/(number of disk)

Put in the number no parenthesis.

Press Return.

Yes, it looks better. Here are some tips to sort out Safari:

Force Quit Safari ( command + option + esc keys). Then restart Safari holding the Shift key.

Turn off Safari extensions in Safari > Preferences > Extensions > un-checkmark all extensions.

Empty Caches. You can either choose Safari menu > Clear History Or, if you do not want to remove History go to Safari menu > Preferences > Advanced and check the “Show Develop Menu” in Menubar. Then, on that menu > “Empty Caches”.

See these Apple Support Topics for detailed advice:

If Safari is slow, stops responding, quits unexpectedly, or has other issues - Apple Support

If Safari doesn't load a page or webpage items are missing - Apple Support

First, I always run EtreCheck immediately before I download an osX update. I saw no issues. (Yes, I did download the newest version first.)

Second, running it this time as you requested, I have never known to take so long before! It was stuck on "Checking Performance." I had to cancel and restart the program.

Thanks for your help. Here is the log:

Finally back to work on this. Could not use Disk Utilty in recovery mode. Drive would not mount! Now trying Option-Command-R and is taking some time. Was this right thing to do? Still won’t mount to run Disk Utility.

Strangely, I’m having almost same issue trying to erase & reinstall on my MacBook 2009 to use as a backup. It will mount but messages go from Software Temporary Unavailable to just plain ole can’t erase drive. Is this the computer gods getting back at me?

Jun 6, 2018 11:43 AM in response to macjack

I thought about resetting the SMC; not have done it. Reran EtreCheck and it's now saying "Good Performance" rather than "poor" as it was. Now I've gone through your suggestion with diskutil list and got this

/dev/disk0 (internal):

#: TYPE NAME SIZE IDENTIFIER

0: GUID_partition_scheme 1.0 TB disk0

1: EFI EFI 314.6 MB disk0s1

2: Apple_APFS Container disk1 1.0 TB disk0s2

/dev/disk1 (synthesized):

#: TYPE NAME SIZE IDENTIFIER

0: APFS Container Scheme - +1.0 TB disk1

Physical Store disk0s2

1: APFS Volume Macintosh HD 123.2 GB disk1s1

2: APFS Volume Preboot 24.5 MB disk1s2

3: APFS Volume Recovery 518.1 MB disk1s3

4: APFS Volume VM 3.2 GB disk1s4

I then did the unmount force /dev/(number of disk) using both disk0, disk1, 0, and 1

The messages were:

MacBook-Pro:~ jmiireland$ unmount force /dev/0

-bash: unmount: command not found

MacBook-Pro:~ jmiireland$

and same message:

MacBook-Pro:~ jmiireland$ unmount force /dev/1

-bash: unmount: command not found

MacBook-Pro:~ jmiireland$

Should I just do the reinstall you suggested? try recovery mode again? not in recovery?

I appreciate all the time and energy you're spending with this.

I did the Combo Update and then ran EtreCheck. The report is below. Still performance rated as "Good". Is there something else I should do? One thing I should mention is it reports I don't have Time Machine on: I use BackBlaze that backups continuously. An Apple tech recommended it to me and it seems to work well. One thing that constantly happens is Safari saying a page is using too much cpu power; pages will freeze or not load or reload and Safari WebContent will sometimes quit, but more often I have to force quit to get pages to work. I don't have this problem with Chrome, but I also really don't like it. Could Safari be a large part of the problem? Another possible problem is PDFPen Pro. I use it constantly with multiple windows and tabs open because of all the work I do with legal and accounting matters. Sometimes it will just not move.

Again, I really appreciate your help. There is progress! I've gone from "poor" to "good" as far as performance!

One of the issues from Etrecheck that has not been mentioned is that you are using up all of your RAM, and forcing the operating system to use the SSD. This is known as swapping, and is slower than RAM access. This may make the Mac have peridos of slower performance than if it did not have to dip into Swap space.

To avoid swapping, you will have to run fewer, concurrent, memory hungry applications, or fewer browser windows.

Sometimes I wish I had my original Apple ][ ...! Problems were a lot simpler then! I'd also have enough money to buy 10-20 new MacBook Pros! I gave it away to some kids in the family to use.

Safari has always been quirky, but I like it so much better than others. I will use Chrome in a pinch when Safari comes to a page that it just doesn't work with!

I have absolutely no extensions added in Safari. The number one usually needed is Flash, but I have it set to ask me each time I need to use it and I use it only temporarily.

I regularly clear History and empty the caches through the Develop drop down.

As far as the RAM, when I look at Activity Monitor, it says the system is using, at most from what I've see, up to 8%. Sometimes I see something like calNCService spike to 70-80% then immediately go to back 0%.

Thank you again for all of your help and suggestions. They have helped greatly. Now I just need to solve the MacBook Pro 2009 thing. I don't ever remember being told I can't erase a drive before! I will definitely use your suggestions. Thank you again,
