iPhoto will not recognize photocard/reader; Unable to import photos.

My problem is as follows: I am unable to import photos to iPhoto since my MacBook has stopped recognizing my cardreader.

Here is the knitty-gritty:
+ Camera: Olympus Camedia C-50 Zoom
+ Card: FujiFilm 256 MB xD-Picture Card
+ Reader: Olympus Camedia USB Reader/Writer MAUSB-10
+ iPhoto: 6.0.1
+ Computer: MacBook Intel Core Duo
+ System: OSX 10.4.6

Some other possibly pertinent information:

• I recently upgraded to Quicktime 7.1.3, which several websites are suggesting is possibly the reason why I am experiencing difficulties. However, these websites are charging $$ for the solution, and I’m hoping to solve this without having to shell out any more money that I already have.

• The pictures are perfectly viewable on my camera. I have tried plugging in the reader w/ card several times, and then returning the card itself to the camera to make sure the images still exist on the card (and to make sure the files weren’t in some way corrupted) all without incident.

• The reader no longer shows up on my desktop. In fact, the reader doesn’t show up in any files on my computer when plugged into the USB (including the side-bar menu within iPhoto where I would normally select the reader/eject the reader), despite the green-light (signaling “in use”) showing up on the reader.

• I have tried everything using both of the USB ports on my computer, to no avail.

• After opening the Apple System Profiler, and checking the USB Bus, I see that my computer is, in fact, recognizing my “USB Media Adapter” as connected to the MacBook.

• In an attempt to force the identification of the reader (even though it is not a camera), I’ve plugged the reader into my USB port, and then launched Image Capture. No dice.

• When I plug the reader into the USB and check the Activity Monitor under “All Processes,” something named “pcscd” shows up. This does not show up under “Administrative Processes” or “My Processes,” however. I assume, therefore, that the reader is being recognized somewhere in the computer, but I am unsure where.

• I have no additional peripherals attached to my computer at this time.

But my questions remain:

• Why has my computer, which only 3 months ago read my photocard just fine, stopped recognizing even the reader?

• What might I do to solve this problem, so that my computer will again recognize the card/reader, and so that I can again import photos to iPhoto?

If you can solve this problem for me I would be greatly appreciative!

I don't know if this will help with the card reader, but -

Since you've updated QuickTime to 7.1.3, you may be better off after you update to OS X 10.4.8 and iPhoto 6.0.5.

It seems that the latest QT update is finicky and doesn't play well with others, so it may help with your Mac overall after you have the latest updates of all three items.

Others have reported problems with the Xtreme Digital memory card. Installing 10.4.8 (download and use the COMBO updater) you may not be at 7.1.3 so give it a try there and see if the card reader works. If you update to 7.1.3 and it fails again, you'll have to reinstall the 10.4.8 combo updater and stay at that level.

TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
