Delete old dead external hard drive from disk utility
My external hard drive died. I have a new one installed for Time Machine. The old HD Backup is still in the sidebar in disk utility. How can I remove it?

Oops, you're talking about Disk Utility, not the Finder, my mistake. If it's listed in the sidebar of Disk Utility, then it still exists.
Remove it using TimeMachine.
