I'm using gmail primarily for my email client.
There seems to an issue with browser mailto links and generally allowing gmail to be the default mail browser in MacOS.
The mail app preference setting appears to not have a way to set a gmail client that is a browser, not an app (Gmail) as your preferred email client.
With the ubiquity of Gmail, there must be a way! How do you do it?
Any helpful advice or discussion appreciated. Mahalo!
It's not possible unless you use an actual email client or application.
Gmail is not a client, it's a service, and a web browser is not an email client.
Use an email application like Mail, Spark, Outlook, Airmail et al, configured to your email account at Gmail and problem solved.
I do not believe it's possible on any system to click an email link and have it associate with a webclient, so you when you click on emails urls it would open a browser and go to a special page and be ready to mail this address. it's not as far as I know how associations works, they only work in terms of opening a program when one click and url and or shortcut or file.

Toggled that from the compose tab, but no change. I assume this would be if I actually open Mail. I don't open the MacOS Mail program much.
In the general tab, there is a drop down for changing the default mail program, but MacOS appears not to allow me the option to choose Gmail.
In Mail's Composing preference pane select the email account you want to use in the "Send Messages from" menu:
gmail is not an email client it is an email account. Your gmail account is accessible using an email client or using your browser.

This is the issue, sorry if I'm not clear in the original post..
If I click a share link from Chrome to mail a link to someone, I would like it to open my Gmail to send the link, not MacOS mail.
Then in Mail's Accounts preference pane delete the Gmail account.
But..
It's not that I don't want MacOS Mail to see and aggregate my mail in the program, I just don't want it to be the primary and preferred go to application for mailto links.
How do you make Gmail the default mail client in MacOS?
