The issue has been resolved.
As the download was through iTunes, it was confirmed update software.
But something went wrong during the update, which is why the OS became inoperable.
Someone at the Apple store I know helped me out and installed the broken update anew and I did not lose any data.
The hard restart by pressing the power button a long time if an update freezes is a good way to do it - so it was not the wrong action. Just in my case the update didn't work at all.
I tried to reboot holding down power button and home button.
Now I cannot power it up again.
If I press the power button, the screen lights up for a second, and then it gets dark again.
Dead.
Great update, Apple! Now your Beta Update broke my phone!
That's what iTunes told me, updating to 11.3.1 - that's nothing I did.
Now my phone won't power on again. I can't call Apple support now.

Yes, it's Apple's fault.
When I connected my iPhone to my computer, iTunes popped up a message to update my iPhone.
All I did was click "OK" to what Apple's own software wanted me to do.
Read my previous post before judging. There's really no one who'd download an update from the web. It all comes through Apple's software pipeline.
Why is it unsigned, if iTunes suggested it? I didn't download it from the web, I just clicked OK to iTunes' pop-up to update - as it usually does.
I am not an Apple-maniac, I just use my phone, so I didn't recognize the version number as an outdated one.
I will never again trust iTunes' suggestions.
So, you installed a beta product that hasn't been released, then unsucessfuly tired to revert to an unsigned version of iOS, and it's Apple's fault?
