Ipod Nano 4th Gen not connecting to iTunes - Too old to save?

So I recently got an Ipod Nano 4th generation simply because I rather like the design of the scroll wheel ipod with a screen to see album art. However whenever I connect it to my laptop, it says it's charging but it doesn't show up on itunes or in the 'This PC' tab. I've tried a bunch of things suggested (resetting the iPod, going to device managers and making sure everythings running/ updating drives, making sure iTunes is up to date, using different USB cables and USB slots on my laptop) but nothing seems to be working.

Is the iPod nano simply too old to save or am I just missing something? Any help would be appreciated.

An added point just in case it's any relevance as to why it's not working; I bought the iPod off a friend who didn't want it anymore, so it is second hand (just in case it's something to do with authorising a computer but I'm not entirely sure why that would be an issue)
