As Barney-15E said, chances are you haven't wiped anything.
Your Mac is showing the black and white type because something went wrong with the install.
Trying restarting and hold down the shift key, this will boot into a 'safe' mode - does this work?
If it does or doesn't, please report back.
You don't say what Mac you have but if you are installing High Sierra, then your Mac will have a 'recovery partition' that you can boot into.
This will allow you to try and repair the computer, or reinstall the operating system.
To do this, restart the computer and hold down the OPTION key during boot and choose the “Recovery” option, or Hold down Command+R keys during boot to access the Recovery HD partition.

Once you've done this you need to select disk utility and try to repair the disk.
If that fails you have the option to reinstall the OS, this just installs the OS over your current install. It doesn't delete any of your data.
A word of advice, if you have very important data (such as photos) on your Mac, you need to understand and invest in a backup solution such as Time Machine which is built in to you Mac.
