unlocking iphone after paying it off

I payed off my iphone from at&t. I want to unlock my phone. I am thinking off moving to another carrier. Do I have to move it right away Or can I shop around for awhile?

iPhone 7 Plus, iOS 11.4

Those are all questions to ask your carrier. They are the ones who can unlock the phone.

You can continue using it on AT&T after having it unlocked by them.

Note that if you have an iPhone 7 or 7 Plus that was sold for use on AT&T or T-Mobile, it is not compatible with CDMA carriers such as Sprint and Verizon.

If I do unlock it does it matter? I want to be able to just go with another carrier if I get a deal? How long does it take to unlock it? Does at&t do the unlock immediately or make you wait? Thanks Rich...
