Hello YnattirB,

Thanks for that info and choosing the Apple Support Communities. If I understand correctly, you are wondering what happens when you revert to the free 5GB iCloud storage option if you have more than 5GB of data stored there. Looking at this Apple resource on your question, this is what will happen:

When you downgrade your iCloud storage plan, the storage decrease takes effect after your current monthly or annual subscription ends.*

If you downgrade or cancel your storage plan and the content that you’re storing in iCloud exceeds your available storage, new photos and videos won’t upload to iCloud Photo Library, files will no longer upload in iCloud Drive, and your iOS devices will stop backing up. Learn how to manage your storage by deleting backups, documents, photos, and email messages that you don’t need anymore.

If you downgrade to the free plan, you'll have 5GB of storage.

Downgrade your iCloud storage

Cheers!

Though I would expect there to be an (unspecified) grace people (so that someone who has an unexpected payment problem has time to sort it out without losing data) Apple are hardly likely to continue to tie up server space indefinitely if it's not being paid for. After all, if they did that, some people would subscribe for a month and upload a lot of data, unsubscribe for say two months, then resubscribe for a month... it wouldn't make business sense. You can expect to lose all data over 5GB after a time, and there's no way of predicting exactly which data will be deleted.

Apple has never clearly stated what happens to the data if you downgrade. I have read several things including:

  • You still have access to all the data but just can't upload anything new and your data won't ever be deleted
  • You still have access to all the data but it will delete excess anything over 5GB after a few months and you will get multiple email notifications
  • Anything over 5GB will deleted after 30 days

Therefore it doesn't seem like there really is a clear answer but I agree completely with rbrylawski - is it worth the $0.99/mo? Skip eating out once or twice, buy a $15 iTunes gift card, and you're covered for more than a year.
