Audiobooks appear to be duplicated in iTunes after update 12.7.5.9

I updated to iTunes 12.7.5.9 yesterday. I usually try to not to update too early with iTunes, as it is notoriously unreliable so very often after upgrades/updates/patches.

The sorting of my AUDIOBOOKS is all haywire now, I've also had to renew my Audible permissions (yet again 😟), re- activate some of the book cover pictures and now there are masses of duplicate audiobooks in my grid view of my collection. I've deleted and re-installed them, changed views etc etc. there was a similar thread from last year on here but there are no satisfactory solutions there either.

Some other settings changed as well (ie. downloading preferences), and many of my 'Love it' icons from my music list have also disappeared (yet again).

Apple make truly beautiful machines for us consumers, but their software is regularly so mind numbingly, heartbreakingly flawed as to be intolerable; and at times near useless. I love my iPad 12.9 G2, but it is exactly this constantly poor software that Apple repeatedly just slops out to people, that has always prevented me from buying a Mac. I can't imagine trying to get any real work done on a machine that behaved or had un-intuitive design features (for non computer programmers) in the same manner as iTunes does. I've just bought a N.O.S Nano 7th Gen, and thought I'd have some fun making up a playlist for it... but of course, here I am hours later, after being forced to try many, many different things, I'm here now and begging for help on the Apple message boards. I still haven't finished the new playlist, have had no fun listening with my new device, and am wasting my leisure time being frustrated and let down by iTunes yet again 😟

Anyway ... blahblah blah; yet another disappointing Apple software experience.

Does anyone have a proper solution to help this poor little TRILLION Dollar company fix basic functionality flaws on one of their flagship products ?

Cheers!

You're running Windows. It will take at most a few minutes to download the script by right-clicking on this link AudiobookSortName.vbs and using save as, download or whatever is offered by your browser. In iTunes select the audiobooks section of the library, then double click the script to run it. There is one confirmation screen, and a summary screen when the work is done. Automatically setting the custom sort names for 189 tracks in my test library took 25 seconds. It takes just 33 seconds to confirm that the 2854 tracks in my main library all have their sort names set correctly.

As I've probably mentioned elsewhere I think Apple aren't really alive to this issue because I suspect everything makes sense with their own test data, and it affects relatively small numbers of people. It is like a gnat trying to get the attention of an elephant. The issue is relatively new in iTunes, but it has been present for over 10 years on iPod classics without being addressed. I cannot be the only one to have provided feedback on it, but nothing changed.

Thanks for the reply tt2 (and obviously your time), but this complex 'workaround' is no good for a customer like me.

I haven't got the time, nor the skills to even get up to speed enough to have a clue about how to actually start using your workaround.

I pay plenty of money to Apple for devices and iTunes purchases. iTunes (obviously) should work without a hitch, it was fine before I updated it. They must have known about this for many months now. The fact that Apple relies on you to try to help their customers when it is clearly their responsibility, is nothing short of breathtakingly bad corporate behaviour, and a skewed view of professional customer service practices and positive interpersonal values.
