Does an iPad charge while shut off

I’m having problems with my iPad charging. My first one was losing power having all sorts of issues, so apple exchanged it. Last night I got it up too 100%, and shut it down. This morning it’s at 76%. Could it be that I shut it down? Does it charge while shut down? I mean completely shut down, sliding the power button and not repowering it up. I have an IPad Pro.

iPad Pro, iOS 10.1

Just to add, battery management should continued to accept power and charge/maintain the battery using basic circuitry as long as it's receiving power. You of course have to shut down while it's connected to power. If the power connection is broken and reestablished, it will of course power back on where it will ask for the passcode.

Not sure what the deal is with your iPad. I should have been at 100% if you had it connected overnight.

Yes, an iPad can continue to charge while it is powered off. If my iPad is powered off and I plug it in to recharge, it will start up on its own. However, if I power down while it is plugged in, it will still charge.

I must be missing something in your question. I don’t understand what you shutting down the iPad would have to do with it not charging. Was it still plugged in to charge and it lost battery power overnight?

Yes, I was having a problem with my iPad Pro losing power while charging, when I reached out to Apple (it was under AppleCare), they did all the diagnostics and finally replaced my iPad. I was having other issues too, such as being dumped out of apps. I did several erases and restores, without correctio, so they had me go into the store. When I got the new one they set it up as new rather than backing it up from the cloud, had me reload all my apps one by one, in case that was the problem with the battery. So when I had my new iPad plugged in last night, it was at almost 100%, so I shut it down and left it plugged in. This morning when I powered it back up it was at 76%. So the battery problem wasn’t with my old iPad evidently. I’m trying to rule out other reasons such as power cords, case, etc. as well. Just wasn’t sure about shutting down completel, since I had been having battery problems for some time before reaching out to Apple. Thanks for your help!

I had thought about that, I have it plugged into a APC unit with surge protection. I’m going to switch that out for a new one too. Unfortunately, unless I do things one at a time, I won’t know what caused it, ie power cord, power strip, etc, which I don’t have the patience to go one and a time, lol! But I will try powering it up to 100% and leaving it unplugged to see what happens, that’s a good idea. That would point to an app, or something internal, since it’s a new IPad. I’ll let you know. Thanks.

That would be my next step as well. If you use a power strip, try plugging directly into a wall socket. The bottom line is that it shouldn’t lose that much battery power overnight even if it isn’t being charged.

I would be curious to see what would happen if you charged it all the way to 100%, then unplugged it and shut it down for the night.

That’s the whole point of the discussion, trying to figure out what is going on with the device.

Sure. But it's hard to tell without physical access to the iPad. But it should still keep the battery charged. Even an iPad that's shut off without being plugged in shouldn't be down to 76% overnight. This is something that might call for a hardware diagnostic from Apple or an AASP.
