I have a lot of videos on my MacBook Pro that I am moving to an external HD by drag and drop. The move works just fine but the original stays on the MBP and makes a duplicate copy. How can I stop the extra copy? I can deal with the retaining of the original...I can always move it to trash later.

There is a danger in "moving" files to another volume rather than copying and deleting the original. That is if there is any kind of interruption in the process, depending on how the drive is connected, etc., the destination and original copy can be lost. So if you're working with an important file you might the old school copy and delete.
Drag and drop is just making a copy of the file as you are experiencing, press and hold the Command key whilst dragging and dropping will move the file and remove it from the source.
