What does a white screen with no icons mean on my iPod Nano 6???

I have a 2011 Apple ipod Nano 6 16 gig Model A 1366. I used the pedometer yesterday. When leaving my destination to go home, I tried turning the pedometer on only to see a white screen. No icons at all. I could hear the volume go up and down but nothing else. WHY IS THERE ONLY A WHITE SCREEN WITH NO ICONS??? WHAT HAPPENED? What causes this to happen?

Don’t know the operating system.

Thanks so much for giving those tests a shot, and for letting us know the results. We mentioned before that we'd need to try something more involved if that didn't work, so at this juncture, we'd like to go ahead and test the software. You likely won't be able to backup your device since it's frozen on the white screen, but you're welcome to plug it into a computer and give it a shot. Given the nature of the problem you're having, you'll likely need to jump into this step—erasing the device and setting it up as new. Here's a great article about how to do that: If you can't update or restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

Through this method, you should regain access to the iPod, but let us know how it goes.

I’ve done all those things. Held the buttons.....it might or might not light up. I’ve charged it - all night. My charge cord is not damaged. The contacts are clean. Re-read my original message. I used the pedometer. Stopped it. Turned it off to save battery power. Turned it back on only to see a whit screen.
