Numbers vs. Excel

How do I disable Numbers and return Excel as my default spreadsheet?

It sounds as if what your asking is how to have your files open in Excel if you double click on them. Assuming they are in a format that Excel can use, see these instructions:

Essentially the same as the previous suggestions, but with some added detail.


Find and select a .xls file. Press command-I to Get Info and open the Info pane.

Click on the Open with box, and choose MS Excel from the menu that appears.

The click the Change All button to apply this default to ALL .xls files.

Repeat, choosing an .xlsx file.


Repeat, choosing a .numbers file would be the next step, but Microsoft has not seen a need to write and include the ability to open and translate .numbers files in Excel. Until they do, you'll need to open each file in Numbers, then export the document to an Excel format file. Once that is done, the exported version of the file will open in Excel as an MS Excel file.
