Files Missing from Desktop but in Finder folder

I have to use Examplify as an exam system for school and I was trying to take an exam earlier today and the program froze while it was trying to close down all the programs on my computer so I had to force shut down the computer in the process. When I turned my computer back on my desktop was empty except for my background picture. If I use the finder I can find the items that were on my desktop but I can't drag anything onto my desktop, or right click on the desktop anymore. I'm not really sure what to do. Anything that needs to open on my desktop (such as the printer program for my school) no longer loads because nothing shows up on my desktop.

Any advice?

Hello LTopiol,

Thanks for reaching out to the Apple Support Communities. I understand you've had some trouble with missing icons on your desktop, and I have some information that may help.

In cases like this, it may be helpful to test the issue in safe mode. Doing so will help to isolate the issue to a startup item, and may also help resolve the issue on its own, as it clears some cached items.

Use safe mode to isolate issues with your Mac
Additionally, when you re-launch Examplify, hold down the shift key to launch it without loading and previously cached items.

If you run into any trouble, please reach out again.
Best Regards.
