Apple Studio Display 17-inch CRT worth fixing?

My 17-inch Studio Display CRT model died last week after a few months of occasional erratic behavior. I know the smarter investment would be to junk it and buy a new LCD monitor, but I like this monitor and if I could get it fixed cheaper than buying a completely new monitor, I'd rather do that. Apple no longer services these. Is it even worth calling local places to see if they can fix it? Does anyone know of someplace nationally I could send it to for refurbishing?

(Before it died, the monitor had started the kind of popping and cracking that is described in posts from a few years ago, and for which Apple had a free recall program until Sept. 2005. Is this a symptom of a specific problem I might describe to a technician?)

The economics of fixing older CRTs are not with you. Technician time is expensive, and working inside it can expose you to the 25,000 Volts that can literally stop your heart.

Shipping CRTs is totally berserk. Now based on the weight plus the size of the box, you can buy a replacement for the cost of a coast-to-coast shipment, one way.

You can sometimes find local discarded CRTs that are no longer being used. CRT displays seem to be going out of fashion, and companies and schools are removing perfectly good displays in favor of trendy flat panels.
