Upgrade mid-2010 MacBook with SSD or RAM and how much?

My elderly father would have trouble learning a new computer, but his mid-2010 Core 2 Duo 2.4.13 (P8600) unibody MacBook takes a minute or more to open any program, so I have to upgrade. OS is High Sierra, he uses the computer only for email and light surfing, and he just needs more speed. Can he get by with just an SSD, or does he need to upgrade RAM, too, and what size SSD or RAM would you recommend given his light usage?

I think 250GB SSD and 8GB RAM might be good enough for your father's usage.

Thank you. Any advice on OWC vs. Crucial as vendors? The 250 GB SSD on OWC is about 50% more expensive...
