macbook air Photo editing malfunctioning

I am having problems with Photos on my MacBook air, following latest update (10.13.5). I can no longer duplicate a photo but a more longstanding difficulty has been using Retouch. Manual source point brings up unrecognisable shapes. When I ctrl click, the message "Clear manual Retouch source point" is not highlighted, so is inoperative. What, if anything, can I do?

message which is now operative but doesn't have any effect. Is it supposed to work like a clone brush or am I expecting too much?

It is supposed to clone the texture, but does not clone the luminosity or color, just the edges as a faint texture pattern.

I do not see much difference before and after cloning this way.

Wait for the Photos 4.0 update, if it will give better cloning results.

From the Photos Help: https://support.apple.com/en-gb/guide/photos/retouch-photos-pht5c38b77c5/mac

Tip: If you’re not getting the results you want, you can copy pixels from another part of the photo and apply them to the blemish. Press the Option key while you click an area that has the texture you want, then use the retouch tool to apply the change. Control-click the image and choose “Clear manual Retouch source point” to stop copying pixels from the area.

The problem with the Retouch Tool has been reported here by several users. It seems to be a bug, and we will have to wait for an update.

But what happens, when you try to duplicate a photo? Do you get an error message?

How are you managing the photos in Photos? Are you using iCloud Photo Library? If yes, is Optimize Storage enabled? Where is the Photos Library stored? In your Pictures folder or on an external drive?
