Airport card connection issues

Hello all,

I just received the Airport card I won from ebay and installed the card. I'm not at all sure exactly what to do now. I confirmed that the iBook sees the card, I went to the network pane and tried various settings but I'm sure I'm shooting in the dark, here. I am currently trying to hook up to a wireless D-Link router I have at home, model DI-524. I assumed the 'automatic' would pick up the signal but I'm not even sure if I have a wireless signal. I run 4 other computers from the router using ethernet. So, could someone tell me exactly what settings I need? Do I need to install software for the D-Link router on the laptop? (I didn't think I needed to). Do I need to verify the router is sending the signal from the G5 iMac? I did do some searching and a password is often referred to; what password would this be? Signing on via ethernet doesn't require any pw as of now. Okay, I'm stumped and the search articles are clarifying enough for me to figure out which way to go next. I'd appreciate some advice.

Michael

Okay, I'm not at all sure exactly what I did if anything but I can connect! Pretty cool as Rhonda once said...

Seems when I went looking for the Airport In Menu control, I found it and did indeed see I was getting a signal. Perhaps it takes a bit to connect the first time?

So, if I were to go to a place where there was another wireless router/network in existence, can the iBook now connect to it providing I don't need a pw?

For my own home system as I noted above, I don't have any such pw in creation. What if I wanted to create one, would it affect the ethernet lines to the other comps or just the Airport system?

Also, any good links I can do more reading up on this so I don't waste anyone's time more than necessary? Some of my questions got clearer when I used the Airport help right on the iBook (haven't had the greatest success when using the onboard help; this was a nice surprise for a change!).

Any further insights/tricks of the network trade would be appreciated.

Michael,

There isn't much to know, as far as I'm concerned (which is why I have a hard time helping folks who have problems).

If I've ever had a problem, I always stumble around (kind of like you did), and eventually it works.

Yes, it will find and, with one click, join any open network. I've used mine in hotels around this part of the country with the same "just works" functionality.

One hotel had a closed network, and when the iBook found its network, I had to call down to the desk for a password, but then it was smooth sailing. Most hotel networks out here have been wide open, though.

Congratulations, and welcome to the wonderful world of wireless!
