MacBook Pro: very slow and fan loud

Hi

I'm experiencing a very slow MacBook Pro with fans on high RPM for certain graphics applications; for example:

- connecting an external display

- streaming a video

- video conferencing

Any help appreciated; thanks in advance.

I'm using a MacBook Pro (2017) running macOS 10.13.5

MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2017), macOS High Sierra (10.13.5)

Hi Jeremy and Joseph

the problem didn't happen in recovery mode, however, in that mode I couldn't use any of the video streams which cause the problem so I just connected an external display.

I noticed now that it may simply be a heating problem. There is a sudden in increase in CPU load (shown in activity monitor) when the problem appears and if I start cooling the laptop the CPU load drops and the computer runs at normal speed again after ~1min.

The laptop is fairly new (9 months), so I find it somewhat surprising if so much dust has accumulated on the inside to reduce the efficiency of the fans. The problem I'm experiencing started recently and it was definitely not there when I bought the laptop.

Many thanks again.
