Wifi speed slow on iMac but fast on iPad

My 2010 iMac running 10.10.5 has been getting very slow download speeds from my AT&T provider's modem. Speed tests show download speeds at 2.97 mbps while my iPad 3 running system 9 is showing 5.92 mbps right next to the iMac. I used to get faster download speeds on the iMac after a reboot. However, recently that hasn't made any difference.

Does anyone have any idea what is going on with the iMac?

Thanks in advance

Also try turning off Bluetooth.

If your Wi-Fi source is capable of generating a 5 GHz Wi-Fi network, try that to help avoid conflicts with Bluetooth.

You are welcome. You might have some software installed that is causing the slowdown.

That was my original thought also except my iPod sitting right next to the computer shows download speeds of 7.37 MPs on my old iPad and 15.4 on my iPhone with the cellular data turned off.

I thought about connecting an Ethernet cable but I would have to disconnect the iMac, move it to the living room, run the test and then return it. Even if the speeds were the same or better than just tethering the computer to the phone to download a file, I'm not running a cable to the bedroom, so what's the point?

Thanks for for the idea, but the problem still exists.

Jul 6, 2018 12:58 PM in response to Bob Cohen

No need to move the iMac, you can buy a long ethernet cable. Solving communications problems is all about dividing the problem into parts to figure out where the issue is. Is this a software issue or a wifi hardware issue. It would be beneficial to know.

Your fairly for from your router. Different wifi hardware will act differently. I read were certain models of the iMac that usb cables caused interference with the wifi adapter.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I'm not going to buy an Ethernet cable 18 ft. long Just for a test. The direct distance between the router and the computer is about 10 or 12 ft. My entire apartment is only 1650 sq. ft. And I can pick up the wifi signal on my iPad out in the street. This issue has only been a problem for about six to ten months and the speed was easily restored after a reboot. Now a reboot makes no difference. I might reload the operating system because something might have gotten corrupted from Time Machine.

I can't understand why the wifi speed is so much faster connected to my iPhone than through my router? Or why the speed from the router to either my iPad or iPhone is so much higher when sitting right next to the computer?

the only time the slow speed is a problem is when downloading a large file. Just tethering it to the phone when I need to download a large file might be the easiest workaroun.

Jul 7, 2018 11:54 AM in response to Eric Root

Thanks, but I would never run the Internet on that computer via Ethernet so it really wouldn't matter. The fact that the same receiver on the iMac gets two completely different speeds is the issue based on receiving the data through the iPhone or directly from the modem. I have rebooted the modem which also made no difference.

Any ny other ideas would be gratefully appreciated.

Wifi speed slow on iMac but fast on iPad
