Time Machine backup on multiple disks

My 2TB external drive is filled up and have a spare 500GB drive lying around. Am I able to do a Time Machine backup to both disks? Not a copy but a single backup file spanning across two drives.

iMac, macOS High Sierra (10.13)

The short answer is no. A Time Machine backup cannot span multiple physical volumes.

You can possibly create a corestorage logical volume, but I'm not prepared to provide step-by-step instructions. Besides, it's far from an attractive solution and Time Machine might not like it. The easiest and most reliable option is to obtain a larger backup drive.
