Do I need to buy a new Apple TV Remote?

My son was watching tv through my second generation Apple TV and it suddenly stopped responding in the middle of fast forwarding. I happened to have another remote for my third generation Apple TV and was able to use that to control the old TV. I figured the battery died, so I replaced it. Nothing happened. I thought maybe I had an old battery that had been sitting around so I went out and got a new one -- nothing.

I have tried the pairing controls on the remote -- nothing. I have rebooted everything. Through it all, the other remote works on both the second and third generation Apple TVs. Is it time for me to give up and just order a new silver remote? And forget about getting the Apple TV remote app to pair with either one of the TVs -- the app on an iPad cannot see either one of the Apple TVs to connect to them.
