My dog chewed my power supply wire in half. what to do???

My puppy dog chewed my power supply wire in half.
It is the thinner wire that has the magsafe connection.

I see the wire inside is not a solid copper wire.
it is a dual layer silver wire.

Is there a way I can fix this?
Is there a splice connector or something i can get at a radioshack to fix it?

User uploaded fileWithout having seen the insides of this cable it's hard to say but the safe answer is rather simple… replace your power adapter. At a minimum I would even though it's the expensive route to take.

I would however additionally splice open the cable you have and see what you can do about it. The problem you have is that if there's a problem your MBP is not childed in any way from an electrical problem as you're DIY job is on the wrong side of the adapter.

All joking and whatnot aside, the advice to purchase a new adapter is sound. You risk shorting out your computer if you use an adapter with exposed wiring. Your adapter's grounding has been compromised, and even if there were a part you could buy from Radio Shack to make the adapter usable, it is doubtful that it would restore your adapters grounding.

Buy a new adapter, and maybe some rawhide chewbones for the puppy. Teething pups don't mean to cause so much damage, so give him something else to chew on instead of your pricey electronics 😀

if the power adapter was plugged in while the dog did this, there is a chance that the power supply burned itself out from a possible short and needs to be replace. if it was unplugged or is not internally damaged (besides the chewed cable), then it is theoretically possible to repair the cable.

you can splice it or solder the cable back together, but your handiness with things electrical will dictate how reliable the repair is. the power going through this part is low voltage ... DC. if for example you do a shoddy repair and don't have proper strain relief, the repair could short in the future and potentially cause a fire. i would do it, because i'm confident in my abilities, but i would still buy a new adapter because i'd rather not travel around with a repaired power supply... and keep the old one as a spare.

i did order a new one.
i hated spending the money.
but i also wanted to repair the damaged one.

i dont see 3 wires. I only see 2.
there is silver wire in the middle then a thin layer of insultion then a layer or wire around that then the outside insulation.

if you were look at it dead on you would see it look like a target shape.

do you know what I mean?
this is not your typical wiring.

it is a stranded core with a stranded shield... braided?... that can spliced back together at the splice point so it is not "coaxial". it won't affect performance.

i personally would solder the center conductor together, insulate and heat shrink the center, then solder the shield and then apply an overall heat shrink to the whole cable.
