Message on my iMac

i was trying to login my message app on my iMac and got this and says updating but nothing happening for an hour stays in one spot I do not see the progress bar moving so i have forced closed it and still comes back with this message see screen shot. How can I bypass this so i can get my messger to work again? Like i said been liked this for an hour. And on dock keeps jumping up and down?

Thank you all for our help into this matter.

Boot into Safe Mode, Mac OS X: Starting up in Safe Mode, and try logging in from there.

Thanks that worked and then shut down for few minutes and restarted computer again as well just to make sure it was gone. But thank you was that a real update cause it was not in apple store under updates? I do not know were that came from. Do you have any idea?

OK so you get that to? But the progress bar was not moving for an hour then decide to force close it. Should I have let it run then? I am confused if it was updaing the database why no info in progrss bar to know how far it moving along? If you think I should let it run let me know please.

What was being updates was not the application but the database that keeps track of all your text messages.

If booting into Safe Mode got the database file updated then there was some 3rd party software that was causing the interference. Safe Mode is the first step in problem solving on a Mac.
