How doI change my passcode when I can't seem to enter it correctly?

Sorry - it's not a matter of being careful - I am entering what I thought I did when I set it up, but there must have been a typo or something in the initial entry that I didn't notice. I need to be able to figure out what it was. I can unlock the phone with Touch ID, but it would be good to have an alternative in case my finger isn't there - like if I need a friend to use it.
Settings > Touch ID & Passcode > Change Passcode
Enter it carefully.
