My Mac and iPhone both can't connect to wifi

Hello everyone,

I deeply hope that someone will be able to help me here.

I have a double problem that affects both my Mac and my iPhone and I really feel helpless because I really don't understand the logic behind this.

1) My iPhone and my Mac can't connect to wifi anymore

  • I was back from one week abroad and realized my iPhone wouldn't connect to my home wifi while the iPad of my partner and any other device except my Mac and iPhone could connect without any problem.
  • I tried to:
    • turn off and on my wifi, mac and iPhone
    • reset my wifi parameters in my iPhone
    • connect to another wifi with my iPhone > doesn't work
  • Then two days later, I tried to connect my iPhone to my mac to run the iOS update. When I First turned my mac on, the wifi connexion (I think) was OK. But then a few minutes after i connected my iPhone to it with a cable, my Mac couldn't connect to wifi anymore either.

2) My iPhone forgot the password of several apps and can't memorize any anymore!

  • I was back from 1 week abroad and I realized that I had to type my username and password to connect to Facebook, Whatsapp and my Bank app (not the other apps, e.g LinkedIn works fine).
  • I thought it was a one-shot problem but no, since then, I have had to type my username again and again when willing to connect to these apps, my credentials aren't memorized anymore.
  • I uninstalled Facebook and my Bank app, and then tried to reinstall them. But:
    • Facebook is too big and i need wifi to download it
    • Bank app: once downloaded on 4G, i need to identify and the app crashes in the middle of the process every time.
  • I also read that a solution would be to download the latest version of iOS (i'm now on iOS 11.3.1, iPhone 5s) but once again I need to be able to connect to wifi and i cannot.

Please let me know what you think about this!

Thanks much

Marie

My best guess is something is corrupted in your iPhone's networking settings, and it may have been transferred to your Mac when you connected the cable. One question, do other devices still connect OK to your WiFi? Could it be a router problem? Any teenagers in the home who might know enough to be dangerous while trying to evade restrictions on access to internet?

Suggestion: For testing, Rename your router SSID. This will make it a new connection and you will have to setup again so you should have a clean configuration if it works.

Now fixing the problem if a new SSID doesn't help or you want to go back to the old SSID... I suggest you power down the Mac (at least disable the WiFi) to avoid any interference while you try to fix the iPhone. Sorry I only have the English setup to give me the menu options, with luck you should be able to find them in the French version.

In the iPhone go to Settings / General / Reset and tap Reset Network Settings. Try to get back and connect to the WiFi, expect you will need to provide your router password again.

If that does not help the universal fix would be to Erase the iPhone and setup again. You probably wish to have a recent backup for this, which might be a problem if your home WiFi doesn't work (try a different WiFi like a cafe or bar). When you are content you have an adequate backup or at least the best available, go to

Settings / General / Reset and tap Reset All Settings Hopefully this will remove any corrupted settings without having to setup like a new phone. If not, go to the same menu and select

Erase All Content and Settings

Then begin the setup process like a new phone. You will also need your AppleID and password to get into Activation Lock.

Thanks Branta_UK for your answer and your time!

I’ll try this fix as soon as I get back home. But actually the problem is the same with all WiFi. I can’t connect to any WiFi (cafe, friends, work, new network) anymore with my mac and my iPhone... even after I made a network reset. 4G is still ok though. That’s why I am wondering if renaming the name of my WiFi would change anything...
