Attach an Email to an Outgoing Message

Hi Apple people,

I am struggling to find out how I can include an email I sent in the past with a new email as an attachment. In Entourage, all I do is drag the old email into the attachments section of the new message and it is ready to go. In Mail, when I drag an old email on top of a new one, nothing happens.

I recently switched from Entourage and this is a feature I use often, as the people I correspond with often lose track of their old emails and I need to be able to attach what I previously sent as back-up.

Thanks for your help.

Hi Juha.

Not sure what you mean by “Apple people”. We’re all users just like you.

The following procedure is probably not as straightforward as you’d like, but it should work:

1. Select the message that you want to include as an attachment.

2. Do File > Save As, choose Raw Message Source from the Format poup menu, and save it wherever you wish.

3. Add the saved file as an attachment to the message you’re composing, just like you would do with any other attachment.

Thanks for the help. Your suggestion is definitely a solution that works but it seems to be very counter intuitive to the whole Apple drag and drop philosophy, as not only does it add a lot of steps but then I need to delete the saved attachment too once it has been sent. Any plug-ins for Mail that could make things work like "they should"? I just found one that previews any emails that come in a la Entourage in a separate window... I hope Apple adds that function in soon...

Thanks again,

Juha

PS: I wasn't sure how to address the group. I figured we are all "Apple people" here;) I have been using a Mac since 1994...

Juha,

Multiple messages can be selected from the list of messages (hold down the Apple/Command key while clicking), and then in the Compose Window, click on Edit, and choose Append Selected messages. All of them, complete with headers info, will become part of the new message. This is not an attachment process, but rather like the forwarding of a single message.
