I believe you are confusing iCloud storage with iPhone storage. Your friend that buys 50GB for 1 each month is talking about iCloud storage which is used mainly for syncing content, backups of devices and full resolution photos.
As for iPhone storage, the iPhone has different storage sizes and my recommendation is to buy the highest storage you can afford mainly because it is not possible to get more storage later and since you are speaking about keeping your iPhone for a long time, your needs and usage and likely to increase as time goes by.
