Athelas and other fonts not in FontBook

Starting with El Capitan, the five fonts below have (almost) never worked as they should in any Apple supplied app (starting from FontBook through Pages and any app that relies on the Apple font control -- MS Word 2016 and others "see" the fonts).

The affected fonts are installed in the MacOS (see /Library/Fonts) but the Apple apps do not see them.

  1. Athelas.ttc
  2. Charter.ttc (restored to grace in High Sierra 10.13.5)
  3. Marion.ttc
  4. Seravek.ttc
  5. SuperClarendon.ttc

Apple support -- who reproduced the bug -- directs users to download them from font sites -- which require pay... "Thank you" Apple for being tone deaf to supporting customers.

The workaround I used is to get the fonts from a Yosemite installation (creation date 9/14/2014) and place them in your user font folder (/Users/[your account name]/Library/Fonts) and voilá the fonts are available to all applications you use. One can also make them work is by copying those fonts from the Yosemite install and replace the ones installed by the OS High Sierra (or any OS from El Capitan onwards).

macOS High Sierra (10.13.5)
