And, if he allowed the scammers access to his computer, you should change all usernames/passwords and erase and reinstall the OS from scratch because you don't know what they were able to copy. Also, since this is a sizable sum, you may just inform your police department if you have details (business name(s), address, whatever) - they may not be able to do anything, but at least these people may wind up on a list.
Credit card companies are also very used to hearing about these types of scams. Make sure to ask them to reverse the charge so the crooks get nothing. And of course, immediately have that card cancelled and a new one issued (it will have a different number).
Date of birth also gave the crooks a big toe into creating identity theft. Besides dealing with your computer as babowa noted, you should also contact all of your financial institutions and ask them what you need to do in order to prevent fraudulent access to your accounts.
Contact your card issuer (bank?) immediately and explain the problem to their fraud prevention experts. They will probably cancel the compromised cards and issue new ones.
