iPod nano 7 Gen not showing up in itunes on Mac

I have an ipod nano 7th generation and I'm trying to connect it to itunes on my Macbook Air and it will NOT show up. It will show up under finder but nothing else. I'm extremely frustrated. I have:

• Tried a different USB port
• Shut down and restarted everything
• Made sure all software is up-to-date.
• basically everything I've read online and through Apple support.

Right now my ipod is useless until I can get itunes to see it. Help!
