safari not responding
my macbook air laptop is up to date with all software
today, my safari app won’t open
i’ve firefox as contingenc, but much prefer safari, what do i do to fix this please

Safari comes with the OS so try reinstalling or restoring the OS from a backup. You say the software is up to date but your profile says Mountain Lion.
Edit: Also try force quit. Press Command Option and esc buttons together to see if Safari is there. then Force quit.

laptop now refuses to restart or shutdown with messages about sw install mangagers interrupting shut down
Force shutdown by holding down the power button then start up in Recovery (Command + R keys), open Disk Utility and run First Aid on your startup disk.
