iTunes 12.8 work w/original Airplay v1 devices?

I'm about to upgrade to iTunes 12.8 on my iMac BUT wonder if my older Airplay v1 devices will still be able to receive streaming audio. I have an older Airport express hooked up to an outdoor stereo, Apple TV 3 for receiving/outputting digital audio on my main entertainment system and an JBL Airplay speaker. I'm concerned that if I upgrade I'll lose streaming ability to all these devices. Thanks for any advice.

iMac (21.5-inch, Late 2013), macOS High Sierra (10.13.5), LOTS of Apple devices

Sadly airplay 2.0 is not compatible with all existing devices. I run speakers through my Pioneer VSX-1021 receiver throughout the house and outside. The new iTunes 12.8 is not compatible and will not connect from my MacBook Pro running os Sierra 10.12.6. This has become a big bummer. I called Pioneer and they have no plans to update their firmware for the receiver to support ITunes 12.8. I wish I didn’t update my apple software. Apple should fix this in the next iTunes update. Retaining backwards compatibility is important and this gaff is probably affecting many iTunes users with pretty current audio hardware. My receiver is only 4 years old. I don’t want to have to pay $300 for a new receiver/amp to drive all my speakers.

Still no luck connecting to my Denon AVR-3312CI with either iTunes 12.8 or 12.9.

I just had a phone call with an AppleCare Senior Advisor, who is referring the issue to an engineering team -- hopefully I should hear something back in 72 hours or so.

In the meantime, I may try these instructions to completely remove and reinstall iTunes and all associated Apple software and reinstall and earlier version of iTunes to see if that helps.

And I'm gonna hold off on updating to iOS 12 for now, too!

Congrats! No such luck for me, however -- I uninstalled iTunes and tried reinstalling the following versions (rebooting between uninstall and reinstall each time):

  • 12.8.0.150
  • 12.7.5.9
  • 12.4.3

Still no luck connecting to my Denon AVR-3312 CI receiver!

The weird thing is, I'm using iTunes for Windows 64 -- which according to Wikipedia, doesn't even include Airplay 2 support!

Hey gang-

Looks like Apple heard us after all. This is from the release notes for Mac OS Mojave 10.14.2 which came out a couple days ago.

macOS Mojave 10.14.2 Update

This update:

  • Resolves an issue that may prevent iTunes from playing media to third-party AirPlay speakers.

I haven't installed it yet myself- I'm still on High Sierra. But I'm going to tackle it this weekend and hopefully get back my iHome iW1 Airplay speakers.

Good news! I found a way to make it work! That is if you have Apple TV... I have Apple TV connected to my receiver with HDMI cable. My lap top is shared with Apple TV. I am able to access Apple TV with iTunes 2.0 on my lap top. Then able to control iTunes/lap top with remote app on my phone. Perfect payback with no hiccups and control 🙌. Just connect to Apple TV from iTunes instead of connecting to your receiver. Your receiver should drive Apple TV through the HDMI connection.

That is indeed an option. Thanks for that!

Other workarounds which I found are:

- using iOS (11.4.1) on iPhone/iPad

- or selecting my airplay device (denon receiver) on my MBP als default audio output device and than start playing music from iTunes.

Both working fine but iTunes airplay is not functioning as before. I hope Apple will fix this in an update.

Note: My B&W A5 speaker with airplay v1 is still working in iTunes as before. Seem like the update did not effect all airplay v1 devices.

Same issue with Pioneer VSX-1021. My Iphone 7 works perfectly using Airplay with the VSX. I don't understand why ITunes 12.8 can't do the same. I've tried playing thru to Apple TV then to the VSX, for some reason the quality of the audio is not as good as straight Airplay. I'm trying AirParrot2, but the quality of the audio is not very good - working with them to determine if I'm configuring AirParrot incorrectly. Apple stating that ITunes 12.8 is backwards compatible to Airplay V1 is a lie.

Unfortunately no, iTunes 12.8 is NOT compatible with all Airplay v1 devices...

I recently discovered that I am no longer able to connect to my Denon AVR-3312 CI receiver since upgrading to iTunes 12.8.

I wish I had never upgraded, as the new features in iTunes 12.8 are much less useful to me than the ability to play music through my home theater system. 😟

I'm hoping that Apple shows some mercy and re-introduced backwards compatibility with older Airplay devices in a future version of iTunes -- it will be a lot easier to find alternate music software than to buy a new home theater receiver!

All I did was uninstall the 12.8. I downloaded the 12.4. But I started that one up, it couldn't read my music. So I went into the programs and uninstalled the Apple phone?? I can't remember exactly what that one was called. I installed the 12.4 again but got the same results. So uninstalled 12.4 again. Reinstalled the 12.8 and it worked.

Remember to restart your computer every time you install or uninstall something to clear it all out.

Really, that's all I did and it worked. I didn't change any settings or anything at all.

Hope that helps. 🙂
