Not sure which charger I need for A1278 or A1280

Hi, a friend gave me his old mac book which we assumed the battery was dead because it was not charged for a while. He didn't have the charger for it so I bought one from amazon for a model A1278 because under the laptop it states that the model is A1278. I tried the new charger but it doesn't seem to be working, the light on the L-Tip is not turning on. I thought that the charger was defected, so I bought another one, but it also doesn't work. Then I noticed that on battery it stated a different model number A1280.
So my question is, when buying a charger, by which model number I have to go by?

My battery says 45 Wh. And by looking at that list it means that I have a MacBook Air because only they use a 45W charger? Under my mac book's screen it only says mac book. Its a 13 inch model and uses L style connector. No idea what year it is.
I'm confused...

Not sure what else you want. The link I provided tells you how to identify your computer and what chargers are compatible. Take the computer to an authorized service center for help if you can't identify the computer.

I want to make sure that I need to buy a charger going by the model of the mac book that is shown on the computer's surface. In that case it's A1278. I already bought 2 chargers compatible with A1278 just to make sure the first one was not defected. Neither one of them work.
Then I noticed that there is a different model number on mac book's battery A1280. That is why I'm confused.
Either way, the charger should be compatible with both.
This makes me question if this mac book is good. It was off for a few years, besides that everything should be good with it.
Is there some procedure I can do to make it work again? Like unplug the battery wire or reset the ram?

Did you click on the Identify Your MacBook, MacBook Pro, MacBook Air links in the article I linked to? Is your computer not listed? Does it tell you how to identify your computer?

The serial number is on the underside of the computer, near the regulatory markings.

I don't see any serial number besides model number on the back.

Tried resetting ram and holding together SHIFT CONTROL OPTION with POWER button, but unfortunately still not resurrecting.
Anyone have more suggestions what might be worth trying?
