Apple Pay transaction showing the wrong merchant name

Hi, I've been using my apple pay to pay for travel on our buses in Birmingham (I work for the bus company so was doing it for testing purposes). However when the transaction came through, the merchant name was for a flooring company near by, not NX Bus Contactless which it should have been. (We have nothing to do with the flooring company! They are not a part of our business).

I've since tapped apple pay on another device 2 other times and it is still showing up as the wrong name. My bank account shows the correct merchant ID of NX Bus Contactless though. I have uninstalled and reinstalled my card on apple pay and the issue still exists. I have spoken to our (NX Bus) PSP, Merchant Bank, ticket machine supplier, apple and my card issuer, all of whom have said they don't think the issue lies with them.

What could be causing the issue?

I suffered the exact same thing a couple of weeks ago, and it fair freaked me out. Payments to a chemist were being shown by Apple Pay as to a cinema opposite. I *have* used this cinema, but not for a long while. At the bank's end, the transaction was correctly attributed to the chemist.

To cut a long story short my case has been escalated through various support tiers at Apple, and I was today told that Cupertino engineers are a.) aware of the problem and b.) working on it. I was advised to update to 11.4.1 today, because that might fix the problem -- but I've yet to have the chance to do that, still less confirm whether or not it does indeed squash this alarming bug.

I'm just sharing my personal experience jazzed up with my professional experience.

It has happened to me couple of times that I bought something from the company xyz LTD and on the credit card was something completely different. Regardless online or for instance a coffee chain. I recall everyone was coming to our branch at the time querying certain transactions on their cards. No one had a clue what it was, till I popped once to Starbucks and realised that there is some umbrella company behind.

Also when a merchant accounts got setup in various systems, there are plenty of fields which hardly gets used. And sadly there can be a lot of mess there. Again talking from previous experience years ago. Normally those fields get populated but sometimes, god know why those details will be just shown on credit card statement...

I got it. In my case the pet store was a national chain but showed up as a different name, but clearly related to pets, on my credit card statement. My guess is that the owners of this pet store outlet are incorporated with a different name. That is likely a vendor issue. But the vendor name showing as a juice store in Apple Pay history seems to be an Apple issue (same with bus/flooring company issue raised by the OP).

That's interesting. Did it happen to you multiple times at the same place (chemist) I only seem to get this issue when i'm using it on the same contactless machines (various machines but for the same merchant), and also when i'm using the same card on apple pay; my other apple pay card doesn't have this issue, but this card, even when uninstalled and reinstalled, continues to show the wrong information!

I didn't manage to get very far with Apple support, they were keen to push me to the card issuer who were helpful, but it seems evident it's not an issue on their part. It sounds like a GPS is getting involved at some point - but not very well...

I am using 11.3 (in the US) and I just had a similar experience. Apple Pay transaction history is showing a charge from a vendor next door to the actual vendor I patronized, but for the correct amount. Logging into my credit card issuer's website shows the correct vendor is listed. The charge was for over $100 at a smoothie store (so says Apple Pay). That is a lot of smoothies.
